Q1 QUIC Data – London is still the Leading Destination for EFL students.

London Strengthens Its Position as the UK’s Leading ELT Destination, New QUIC Data Shows

New Q1 2026 data released through English UK’s QUIC reporting system paints a clear picture of London’s continuing leadership within the UK English language teaching (ELT) sector.

Despite ongoing global market adjustments and softer overall figures across the industry, London remains the UK’s largest ELT destination by student weeks, reinforcing the capital’s central role in international language education.

According to the latest QUIC Snapshot Report, London generated 30,322 student weeks during Q1 2026, representing 30.4% of the entire UK market — the largest regional share in the country.

In practical terms, this means that nearly one in every three ELT student weeks recorded in the UK during the first quarter of 2026 took place in London.

London Continues to Lead the UK Market

The figures are particularly significant when viewed against the wider sector context.

Overall UK student weeks declined by 7% year-on-year in Q1 2026, with adult student weeks falling by 10%, while junior weeks increased by 15%.

Yet even within a more challenging operating environment, London maintained a clear lead over all other UK regions, outperforming:

  • South and South Eastern England (23,145 student weeks)
  • Northern England (21,700 student weeks)
  • South West England and the Channel Islands (9,825 student weeks)

These numbers reinforce London’s resilience and long-standing international appeal across both adult and junior markets.

Why London Continues to Attract International Students

London’s position within the ELT panorama is not simply about size — it is about global relevance.

The city remains uniquely placed at the intersection of:

  • world-class education
  • international business
  • culture and tourism
  • transport connectivity
  • academic progression opportunities
  • multicultural student experiences

For many international students, studying English in London continues to represent more than language learning alone. It is often viewed as a gateway to global careers, higher education pathways and international networking opportunities.

This is especially important at a time when students are increasingly seeking educational experiences that combine language acquisition with employability, professional development and cultural immersion.

Adult Market Still Dominates

The Q1 data also confirms that adult education continues to represent the core of the UK ELT industry.

Adults accounted for 85% of all student weeks recorded nationally during the quarter, while junior programmes represented 15%.

This positioning strongly benefits London, where demand for:

  • General English
  • IELTS preparation
  • Business English
  • Professional courses
  • Academic English
  • English for career progression

continues to remain particularly strong.

London’s international reputation as a business and academic centre gives the city a competitive advantage in attracting mature students seeking career-oriented outcomes from their studies.

International Demand Remains Broad and Diverse

The report also highlights the diversity of source markets continuing to support the UK ELT sector.

Among the leading markets in Q1 2026 were:

QUIC Q1 - markets
QUIC Q1 – market sources

This broad geographical spread is particularly positive for London providers, whose student populations have historically been among the most internationally diverse within the UK.

London’s global profile and strong international flight connectivity continue to make it one of the most accessible and recognisable ELT destinations worldwide.

Agencies Continue to Play a Critical Role

Another notable finding within the QUIC data is the continued importance of the agency network to the ELT sector.

Commissionable bookings accounted for 74% of all student weeks recorded in Q1 2026.

This underlines the ongoing strategic importance of international education agents and recruitment partners — particularly for London schools operating in highly competitive global markets.

For many providers, maintaining strong relationships with overseas partners remains essential to sustaining growth and diversifying recruitment.

What These Numbers Mean for London’s ELT Future

While the wider UK sector continues to navigate changing market conditions, the latest QUIC data confirms that London remains the country’s flagship ELT destination.

The capital continues to combine scale, international recognition, educational quality and global connectivity in a way few competing destinations can replicate.

At the same time, the figures also highlight the importance of continued sector advocacy, international mobility policies and strategic promotion of the UK abroad.

As global competition for international students intensifies, London’s leadership position offers both an opportunity and a responsibility: to continue innovating, welcoming international learners and reinforcing the UK’s reputation as a world-leading destination for English language education.
